LEADERSHIP IS SPIRITUAL

“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care!”
– John C. Maxwell

Welcome to this new edition of ‘The Now Leadership’.

Leadership must be felt from the core of the soul until it can be said to be impactful and effective. You don’t just carry it on your head that you’re a leader. Much more, you must know and show it from your heart by your actions and disposition.

I believe that people are more important than anything else on this earth. They are not robots, but humans with emotions and feelings. They have desires, cravings and plans to become successful and fulfilled. The essence of leadership is to change the position of people positively, to move them from where they are to where they want to be. And as a leader, you cannot do this successfully with just your head. Your heart as a leader has got to be involved for people to experience the change that they desire.

John Maxwell said and I quote, “To lead yourself use your head, but to lead others use your heart”. How true is that statement? Mahatma Gandhi couldn’t have caused a revolution in India if he didn’t engage his heart (spirit) in the process. Winston Churchhill couldn’t have led the transformation of the British world if he had just some flimpsy ideas in his head and did not engage his heart on that course. The speech entitled “I have a dream” remains to be one of the greatest speeches ever rendered in this world to date because it was a speech drawn from the depth of the heart of Martin Luther King Jnr. Today racism is a thing of the past in the United States of America. The kind of speech that will drive men to productive actions and pursuits has got to be from the heart of a leader that has value for the well being of his people.

Compassion is one quality that will distinguish any leader any day, any time, anywhere. If you are not compassionate as a leader, people cannot be drawn towards you as followers. This is one quality that makes a leader to feel the pains of his people, feel the urge to do something about the situation, and decides to do something to make a lasting impact. The greatest leader who ever lived and the ultimate leader himself- Jesus, exhibited this quality in his earthly walk and that was the main reason people did not seize to follow him then, and even after more than 2,000 years he left this earth.

One of the ways to influence people to positive actions is when a leader is compassionate to the course of his people. A line in the holy book says “If you will be a servant to this people, be considerate of their needs and respond with compassion, work things out with them, they’ll end up doing anything for you!” (2 Chro 10:7 (MSG)). That’s influence, and that’s what leadership is all about.

Compassion is not something you generate from your head, it emanates from the core of the heart. People will be committed wholeheartedly to the course of any leader once they can perceive compassion in him. One of the things that make followers to stand against any leadership set-up is when they feel they are just being used and pushed aside as if they are robots. One of the things that we crave most as humans is the desire to be appreciated and respected. That you are in charge of things in that organization does not mean you should step on people as if they are non-entities. No! They are peculiar, they are assets to that organization. They are the reason you are there. You are responsible to them, not them to you. They are your responsibility.

Friends, do you want to live a fulfilled life? You want to make a landmark in the sand of time? You want generations after you to call you ‘blessed’? You want to live a life of success and impact?… Then, go out of your way to serve people. Be willing to be a blessing to your world. Myles Munroe, an apostle of purpose said and I quote “The richest parcel of land is not an oil field, but a burial ground”. Why? Because many people that are meant to be great leaders died without realizing their leadership potentials. That gifts and talents that are meant to change the course of living of people around them did not see the light of the day. Most died in obscurity and mediocrity. They didn’t die empty.

Friends, I challenge you today, make a commitment today that you’re going to die empty by bringing to the surface those things that are buried deep in your spirit, in the core of your soul-that ideas that’ll bring solutions to the complex human problems. And one of the things that will move you to bring it forth is when you have value for people around you, when you have value for human life. And that is compassion!

In leadership, compassion is one quality that you cannot do without if you’ll be a leader of repute and it emanates from the spirit of a man, not the head.

You will succeed!

Love,

Great insight and thoughtfulness. No wonder many fail as leaders, they are not patriotic because their spirit is not involved. Thank you for writing this. More inspiration IJN.
